April Fools 2010 – Google's Sense of Humor

Historically Google has been known for pulling various April Fools Day Pranks – and when done with reasonable taste, they can be pretty comical.  But today really surprised me.  A multi-billion dollar Fortune 100 firm that can even handle poking a bit of fun at itself.  Upon opening a Google search page today the following was displayed

Google's Home page 4/1/2010

Google has changed its name!!  At least for today, to Topeka, a move intended to honor the city in Kansas that recently changed its name to Google for one month in hopes of being selected as a one of the cities to receive a new, ultrafast fiber-optic network.  So today you can go “Topekaing” to get some info.

Plus Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt blogged about the name change today on the company’s Web site.

“We didn’t reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name,” Schmidt wrote. “But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka’s municipal Web site, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains.”

Heaven knows we need a bit of lighted hearted humor these days – Thanks Topeka KS and Google.
